Finally looking good...
Hi guys,
After her fluids and vitamin injections Silver started eating again and has been on a roll. Thank God her distemper tests came back negative. She's putting weight back on and her new family loves her. xL She's only 45 lbs now
![]() Silver lost 10 lbs in a week and went back to the vet...
On Friday Silver's foster mom told me she was concerned because Silver still wasn't eating much, her cough was worsening and was started to get diarrhea. I went over there and took her temperature. It was 103.2. I took her into the vet and we ran some tests and took an x-ray. They clearly show that she has substantial pneumonia and so the vet changed her meds from Baytril to Chloramphenicol. Right now I'm praying it's only the pneumonia as a result from possibly aspirating during her surgery. We did a distemper test but I won't even allow myself to think that it could be that right now. The vet also gave her fluids and a shot of B-12 and Silver IMMEDIATELY perked up, ate a plate of food and her mom said that when she got home she was galloping around like a puppy. Yesterday her appetite and energy was good too so I am very optimistic and hopeful. I have really grown to love this little girl who has done nothing but make the best of of every awful situation life has handed her thus far.
I have gotten some emails enquiring about the vet bills. Her total from Friday was $290. The one previous to that was $850. I have written a letter to the shelter asking that they consider returning her $280 pull/spay fee given the results of their spay. I've opened a credit card to help me pay for the dogs I'm helping and I'm committed to seeing this little girl through until she is healthy again. I have also gotten emails from all of you asking what else can be done and all I can say is please continue to pass around her chipin link so that I'm able pay her vet bills in a timely fashion so that I can return to that hospital with the next dog I'm trying to help. And please keep Silver in your thoughts. Thank you again for all your help, Laura She is such a good girl and wants to feel better.
![]() She's so skinny you can really see the fluids/b-12 bubble as she thanks the vet for helping her.
![]() He cough has become deep and hacking and the fluids & B-12 helped IMMENSELY
![]() She clearly felt sick but also happy to have someone hang out with her. Her tail was wagging.
![]() Back in a cage...she should have been at her new foster mom's getting spoiled.
![]() She looks underweight and when she was check into the shelter her paperwork said "ideal weight"
![]() Silver has a home...but she was spayed at the shelter and now she's sick.
Two days ago I took a wonderful girl who wanted to foster-to-adopt Silver (as she is now called) to meet her at the West LA shelter where she was impounded on 8/31. They hit it off and Silver was so happy and dancing around. They girl said Silver was beautiful and wanted to giver her a home. I filled out the paperwork and spoke to the vet tech because I wanted to try to defer the surgery since she was in heat. The tech told me she was no longer in heat and even if she was, it was "his prerogative" and he wouldn't defer even though it was a riskier surgery. After finishing the paperwork I went to the vet across the lot and told them she had been in heat and I wanted special care taken. They said there was an upcharge because of her condition and asked if I wanted to pay more for fluids and all kinds of other stuff. I said yes - I wanted every care taken. The total shelter bill for pulling her wound up being $278. Yesterday I went to pick her up at 4:30PM and when I got there they told me that she had thrown up on herself so they were bathing her again. I was immediately concerned but they said sometimes anesthesia can make a dog sick. I asked if it had anything to do with the fact that she was in heat. They said probably not - they do a hundred a month. They carried her out and put her down and she immediately collapsed. They assured me she was just still woozy from the anesthesia - she was only 85% awake. I asked if they shouldn't hold her for observation longer and they said yes - for another 30 minutes. They took her to the back and I called my vet in a panic. They brought her back out 30 minutes later and I said I was taking her to my vet. The put her in my car and she vomited again - tons of foam and bile. I was so upset and the desk man said it could be "anything" but the doctor should give her another injection of anti nausea stuff. I said no - I was taking her to my vet and we left. My vet said she was clearly in pain and perhaps had thrown up the pain killer but needed something to ease her pain. He also said that she was nauseous - she kept licking her palate. He suggested she stay there for observation. This morning she wouldn't eat and she threw up twice more and her nose had a little discharge. They put a catheter in her and tell me she's resting. They did blood work but it'll take a couple of days to get the results. I am devastated. She's been through so much and now this? I'm praying that it's just post spay stress/nausea but the blood needs to be run just in case. Her foster/adopter has been checking on her religiously and wrote "I cannot wait for her to come home so she can start her happy times." |
